In my early days I was dumb enough to make URLs like this:

http://www.gamebrink.com/playstation-portable/2981-Dragoneers_Aria-info.html

It’s almost good but not quite. You see Dragoneers_Aria has an underscore.

2 years ago I thought nothing of it but today I’ve come to find out that Google and other search engines see the underscore as no space at all.

So in reality Google sees Dragoneers_Aria as DragoneersAria. This is bad.

So for further projects I’ve moved over to all dashes instead of underscores which is the default in Wordpress for a reason.

Very few pages at GameBrink rank in Google while this blog and NuclearSushi.com started ranking right away largely because I used Dashes and not Underscores.

So Metroid_Prime_3 is BAD as Google sees this as MetroidPrime3.

And Metroid-Prime-3 is GOOD because Google sees this as Metroid Prime 3!

And even though Google as come out and publicly said that now Underscores are now word separators, proclaims Google I see no reason for you to test this theory as in practice I’ve found this not to be true.

7. They’re Expensive

They charge you a huge sum of money up front and then require a monthly fee as well to “maintain” rankings.

6. There’s No Guarantee

Most SEO firms will not guarantee anything. They only backup what they can do with examples, analysis, and the dreaded testimonial.

5. Anyone Can Claim To Be A SEO

It requires no formal education and since most are based through websites and not offices it’s easier to deceive clients. Set up a website, happen upon some rankings, and boom you’re a SEO.

4. Many SEO’s Live In The Past

Some that have high rankings under such popular terms as “seo” and “search engine optimization” are only there because of the age of their site. And since they have this false authority they keep on doing the same things they’ve been doing since the 90s. If a SEO offers to submit your site to 100s of search engines you know his or her time has past.

3. “Renting” Bad Links

They head to a link broker, find a high PR website of a similar topic, and they buy a link using your money. Only problem is that a lot of the time these sites have fake or false PR, they are spammy worthless sites, and or the link costs way more than it should.  This is not the way to link build.

2. They Don’t Want You To Ever Hit The Top 5

If you get above 5 and thus into the top fold on the first page of the search results you’re targeting there’s a chance you’ll stop using there services. They inherently don’t want you to rank too high so that you keep paying them for eternity.

1. You Can Do It For Nothing

Using this blog and many others like it you can do it. Thanks to Wordpress it’s even easier than ever and through hard work and determination, not shelling out large sums of cash to idiots, you too can rank.

Although I can’t post any real hard proof of this I have sites that use both a trailing slash and those that don’t and those that don’t definitely get more traffic.

For some odd reason, which may be fixed or changed at any time, Google loves urls that have zero trailing slash.

So use mod_rewrite in all its glory and configure all your plugins to avoid this and enjoy more traffic!

Even if you don’t see any improvement there’s no harm done so give it a try.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about here is what I mean:

No trailing slash = Good

Yes that’s the entire movie “Roger & Me” from Michael Moore.Why is an hour and a half of an entire copy of a copyrighted movie available on Google Video?
