Google Analytics

Google went ahead and bought Urchin traffic analyzer software and opened it up to the public so now you can have the benefit of traffic tracking software that used to cost $1k-$5k for free.

The only catch is that the data only updates once a day around midnight.

That being said it does offer extremely useful info, graphs, tools, etc so it’s essentially a must for a website these days.

If you’d like to see traffic throughout the day you could also install other less advanced traffic software to get a feel during the day.

Here’s a look at what you get for free:

Here’s where you sign up:

And once you’re all registered all you do is put a piece of Javascript code in the footer of all your webpages.

So in Wordpress you’d just place it before the </body> tag in footer.php.

The only thing you really need to setup in the Google Analytics control panel is one filter to exclude your own IP so that your traffic doesn’t count towards the total.

To do that click on “Filter Manager” > “+Add Filter”

Set “Filter Type” To “Exclude All Traffic From An IP Address”

Add your website to the “Apply Filter to Website Profiles” and click Finish.

You’ll have to repeat this if your IP changes.

Simply copy and paste the code below into your web site (Ctrl+C to copy)
It will look like this: Google Analytics
